Quick take

USC housing ranges from residence halls and suites to furnished apartments. Most undergraduate residents receive a 36 × 80-inch Twin XL bed, but the assigned building and unit type determine the kitchen, bathroom, furniture and appliance setup.

Start with the building and unit type

USC's housing inventory includes traditional residence halls, suite-style housing and apartments on and around the University Park campus. Use the official USC Housing site to confirm building and room or apartment type, occupancy, bathroom arrangement, mattress size, provided kitchen appliances, suite or apartment living-room furniture, and current check-in location and appointment.

Bedding rule

USC says most undergraduate residents can expect a 36 × 80-inch extra-long Twin bed. Check the assigned building because some housing categories and single-occupancy apartment rooms can differ.

What USC provides

USC housing is furnished. Most undergraduate residents receive a bed and mattress, desk and desk chair, dresser drawers and closet space. Residence-hall rooms generally include a microwave and refrigerator combination unit. Apartments with full kitchens generally include a stove or oven and refrigerator, while other appliances and living-room furniture depend on the unit type. Do not buy a microwave or refrigerator until the assignment has been checked. The room may already have handled that problem for you.

What to pack first

  • Bedding sized to the assigned mattress
  • Mattress protector and optional topper
  • Towels and bathroom supplies
  • Laundry hamper and detergent
  • Hangers, approved power accessories, fan and task light
  • Cleaning supplies and personal medications
  • Cookware and utensils only for units with kitchens

Coordinate before buying

Talk with roommates about the rug, television, cleaning supplies, dishes and cookware, bathroom items and small kitchen appliances allowed in the assigned unit. Extra furniture is rarely the first move. See the room, measure the space and then decide whether the cute chair has earned the square footage.

Move-in notes

  • Select or confirm the university's current check-in appointment.
  • Bring photo identification.
  • Review the assigned building's check-in location and parking instructions.
  • Do not ship items until USC provides the correct mailing guidance.
  • Keep bedding, toiletries, medication, chargers and a change of clothes accessible.
  • Document the room condition during check-in.
