Quick answer: Skip anything that duplicates what the room or roommate already provides: extra furniture, a printer, an ironing board, a full kitchen setup. When in doubt, wait until after move-in; you can buy most of it locally in a day.
Before you buy the entire dorm aisle, here are the things you probably don't need, or at least don't need yet.
1. Extra furniture
Dorms already come with furniture, and floor space disappears fast. Don't buy chairs, shelving units, nightstands or carts until you know the room dimensions and what's provided.
2. Bed risers before checking the bed
Many dorm beds are already adjustable or loftable. Some schools restrict risers. Verify first.
3. A printer
Campus printing is often available, and many assignments are digital. Wait until you know whether having a printer would genuinely save you time.
4. An ironing board
If you already iron regularly, fine. Otherwise, this is probably not the semester you suddenly become passionate about pressed collars. A wrinkle-release solution may be more practical if permitted and appropriate.
5. Too many towels
Two or three bath towels is usually enough for one student with a normal laundry routine. Eight towels mostly become eight things that need washing.
6. A full kitchen setup
If you have a meal plan and no kitchen, you don't need cookware for a fictional future in which you're preparing four-course dinners in your dorm.
7. Appliances you haven't verified
Air fryers, hot plates, toasters, kettles, coffee makers, microwaves and other appliances may be restricted. Check your school's housing policies before purchasing.
8. Huge quantities of toiletries
College towns have stores. Unless you're moving somewhere extremely remote, you don't need a year's supply of shampoo under your bed.
9. Tons of school supplies
Start with basics and buy course-specific supplies after you receive your syllabi.
10. Storage for storage's sake
Don't buy ten bins before you know what you're storing or where the bins fit. Measure first.
11. Duplicate roommate items
Two vacuums, two rugs and two TVs don't make the room twice as functional. Coordinate with your roommate before shopping.
12. Every piece of decor before move-in
Decor is fun, but leave yourself room to see how the space actually feels. Your plans may change once the furniture is arranged.
13. Your entire wardrobe
Bring what fits the season and your actual lifestyle. If home is close enough, swap seasonal clothing later.
14. Things you don't personally use
Don't buy something because every TikTok dorm video has one. If you've never used a bedside caddy, steamer, coffee maker or elaborate skincare fridge at home, college may not magically change that.
The smarter rule
Put questionable purchases into three buckets:
- Buy now: you know you'll use it and know it works in your housing setup
- Verify first: depends on rules, measurements or your roommate
- Buy later: easy to get after move-in if you discover you need it
That simple system saves money, space and a lot of returns.
