Quick take

Most UC Berkeley residence-hall rooms use Twin XL beds and already include a MicroChill refrigerator and microwave. A few housing locations use Twin or Full XL beds, so confirm the assigned building before buying fitted bedding.

Start with the assignment

Berkeley housing includes traditional residence halls, suites and apartments. The building page is the best source for the bed, bathroom style, furniture and included appliances.

Use the official housing options to confirm building and room type, occupancy and bathroom setup, mattress size, provided furniture, meal-plan requirements, and apartment or kitchen features.

Bed-size exception

Berkeley says most campus rooms have Twin XL beds, Panoramic Berkeley apartment rooms may have Twin beds, and xučyun ruwway rooms have Full XL beds. Buy the sheets for the assignment, not for the average.

What Berkeley provides

Residence-hall rooms generally include a bed, desk, chair, drawers, shelf or closet space, mirror, wastebasket, lighting and window coverings for each resident. Residence halls also include a MicroChill refrigerator and microwave combination unit.

Personal microwaves and refrigerators are not allowed in residence-hall rooms. That is one large purchase you can happily remove from the list.

Apartment furnishings and appliances vary by building. Review the assigned building page before shopping.

What to pack first

  • Bedding sized to the assigned mattress
  • Mattress protector and optional pad or topper
  • Towels, shower caddy and shower shoes
  • HE laundry detergent and hamper
  • Hangers
  • Approved power strip or extension cord
  • Non-halogen desk lamp
  • Room-cleaning supplies
  • First-aid items and a small emergency go bag

Berkeley recommends waiting until after move-in before buying bulky storage or extra furniture. The room gets the final vote on whether that rolling cart has a future.

Coordinate before buying

Talk with roommates about the rug, fan, cleaning supplies, shared dishes and bathroom items for suites or apartments. Do not buy a personal refrigerator or microwave for a residence-hall room.

Move-in notes

  • Review the assignment and building page.
  • Complete the university's current move-in tasks and use the assigned time slot.
  • Check the official parking and unloading instructions when released.
  • Label boxes clearly.
  • Keep ID, medication, bedding, toiletries and chargers easy to reach.
  • Review renter's insurance options and photograph the room condition.
