One rented MicroFridge per first-year room
Personal first-year refrigerators and microwaves are prohibited. The only option is a single MicroFridge rented through UVA's exclusive provider, so coordinate it with the roommate rather than buying anything.
Bed and room basics
UVA undergraduate housing is furnished and commonly uses Twin XL bedding, though the housing-area page for the assigned building is the authoritative source on bed size. Room type, bathroom, kitchen, air conditioning and storage vary across housing areas, so wait for the exact assignment before buying bedding, rugs, organizers, furniture or shared appliances.
Pack these first
- Bedding in the size confirmed for the assigned housing area
- Towels, a shower caddy and toiletries
- Hangers
- HE liquid detergent
- A UL-rated power strip
Rules and smart skips
- Prohibited: large furniture, personal first-year refrigerators or microwaves, air fryers, toasters, air conditioning units, space heaters, adhesive LED strips, extension cords, routers, fabric hangings and electric mobility devices.
- Adhesive LED strips and fabric hangings are both on the list, which rules out two of the most common dorm decor purchases.
- Personal routers are prohibited, so bring an ethernet cable rather than networking gear.
Before move-in
- For 2026, first-year move-in was August 20 or 21, by building and appointment.
- Set up the University ID and keyless-lock PIN before arrival.
- Label belongings and keep a driver with the vehicle.
- Unload within the two-hour window, then relocate the car.
- Coordinate the single rental MicroFridge with the roommate.
