Quick answer: Air conditioning, bathroom type, kitchen access and laundry all vary by building, not by school. The housing website lists them per hall, usually on the individual building page. Check the hall you were assigned rather than the university average.
Do dorms have air conditioning?
Many do, and plenty do not. Newer construction and southern schools are far more likely to have central air. Older halls in the Northeast and Midwest frequently have none, and some are only partially air conditioned, with common areas cooled and rooms not.
If the hall has no AC, a fan is not optional. Check whether window units are permitted before buying one, because most halls prohibit them outright and a few allow them only with a documented medical need.
Do dorms have private bathrooms?
Three arrangements cover nearly everything:
- Communal. A shared bathroom per floor or per wing. Most common in traditional first-year halls.
- Suite-style. A bathroom shared between two rooms, usually four to six students.
- Private. Rare for first-years outside apartment-style housing.
This is the single detail that changes the packing list most. A communal bathroom means shower shoes, a quick-draining caddy, a robe and a plan for carrying everything down a hallway. A suite bathroom means you and three other people now share a cleaning schedule.
Do dorms have kitchens?
Most residence halls have a shared kitchen somewhere in the building, often one per floor or one per hall, and it is usually less equipped than you would hope. Assume a stove, a sink, sometimes an oven, and no cookware.
In-room cooking is a different question. Microwaves and mini fridges are commonly allowed within size limits. Anything with an exposed heating element, including hot plates, toasters, air fryers and electric grills, is banned in most halls and confiscated at move-in.
Do dorms have laundry?
Almost always, in the building or immediately adjacent. Payment is the part that varies: some schools include laundry in housing fees, others use a card, an app, or coins. Check before move-in so you know whether to bring quarters or download something.
Do dorms have elevators?
High-rises do. Three and four story traditional halls often do not, and a fourth-floor walk-up changes what you should bring on move-in day. Assignment emails rarely mention it, but building pages usually do.
Do dorms have wifi, and is it good?
Every school provides wifi. The reliable pattern is that personal routers, mesh systems and wireless printers are prohibited because they interfere with campus networks. Bring an ethernet cable if the room has a port, since a wired connection is the actual fix for a slow room.
Do dorms allow pets?
Effectively no, with two exceptions: fish in a small tank are permitted at many schools, and documented service or assistance animals are handled through the disability services office, not housing.
