You may not need a microwave

Most UH residences already provide microwave access in rooms, suites or community kitchens, and UH says students often do not need to bring one.

Bed and room basics

UH runs traditional halls, suites, apartments and lofts, and bed size, bathrooms, kitchens and supplied appliances differ across all of them. Check the assigned community page before buying bedding or a refrigerator, and hold off on rugs, organizers and furniture until the room type is known. The dorm bed size guide helps if the listing is ambiguous.

Pack these first

  • Bedding once the community confirms the size
  • Towels, toiletries and a shower caddy
  • Laundry and cleaning supplies
  • Hurricane season supplies and something for Houston heat
  • Approved surge protection

Rules and smart skips

  • Skip the microwave until you confirm the assigned residence does not already provide access.
  • Open-coil appliances, air fryers, toaster ovens, hot plates and heaters are prohibited.
  • Non-battery string lights, hoverboards and unapproved pets are also prohibited.

Before move-in

  • Move-in appointments are selected in advance through the housing portal.
  • All communities except Bayou Oaks check in at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Bayou Oaks residents go directly to their hall.
  • Set up the Mobile Cougar Card first.
  • Follow the color-coded traffic signs and move the vehicle after unloading.
