Quick take

Students in traditional and suite-style housing may not bring a personal microwave. If you want one, it comes through Northeastern's approved MicroFridge rental program. Apartment rules may differ.

Bed and room basics

Northeastern's Boston rooms include a bed frame with a Twin XL mattress, a desk, chair, dresser and window shade. Most rooms are doubles or triples, and some share a single closet. Housing spans traditional residence halls, suites, apartments and university-leased properties, and bathroom, kitchen, laundry and appliance rules depend on which type you land in. University furniture must stay in the room, and outside furniture is prohibited except for a desk chair.

Pack these first

  • One or two Twin XL sheet sets plus a Twin XL blanket or comforter and pillows
  • Towels and toiletries
  • A fan
  • Hangers and laundry supplies
  • A surge-protected outlet strip
  • Foldable duffels, since storage is limited and hard-sided luggage has nowhere to live

Rules and smart skips

  • No personal microwave in traditional and suite-style housing. Use the approved MicroFridge rental instead.
  • Prohibited: appliances with exposed heating coils, personal air conditioners, halogen lamps, tapestry wall hangings and weightlifting equipment.
  • No outside furniture except a desk chair.
  • Review the Guide to Residence Hall Living for the complete current list before buying anything borderline.

Before move-in

  • Do not book travel until the official move-in date and time arrive.
  • Each student receives building and parking directions with their assignment.
  • Housing Online may offer an arrival-change process, but alternate dates and services are not guaranteed.
  • Follow the assigned vehicle route and pack only what one trip can carry.
  • Check the ResMail address before shipping anything ahead.
