Quick take

First-years are assigned to suites, not to a specific bedroom, and Harvard does not publish dimensions in advance. Bring bedding and bath, wait on everything that has to fit somewhere.

Bed and room basics

Harvard College first-year rooms provide a Twin XL bed with a 38-by-80-inch mattress, plus a dresser, wardrobe or closet, desk and chair, bookcase, and a floor lamp. Most first-year students live in or near Harvard Yard in suites containing two to four bedrooms and a common room shared by three to six students. Most bathrooms are shared with other suites, though a few suites have their own. Students are assigned to a suite rather than an individual bedroom, so expect that a bedroom may be shared.

Pack these first

  • Twin XL bedding for the 38-by-80-inch mattress, plus a pillow, topper or pad, and a blanket or comforter
  • Towels, toiletries and laundry supplies
  • Winter clothing, since Cambridge earns it
  • A surge protector and a desk lamp
  • Non-damaging temporary adhesive for anything going on a wall
  • A trash can, since suites include recycling and compost bins but not one for trash

Rules and smart skips

  • Skip large organizers, rugs, extra seating and duplicate shared items until you have seen the suite. Configurations are not released in advance.
  • Harvard supplies the core furniture and a floor lamp, so do not buy either.
  • Coordinate with suitemates after assignments are released in August rather than before.

The suite is the unit here, not the bedroom. Almost every buying mistake at Harvard comes from shopping for a room nobody has seen yet.

Before move-in

  • Harvard lists August 26, 2026 for first-year students not in a pre-orientation program.
  • The First-Year Experience Office provides each student's time slot, key location and driving directions.
  • Bring government-issued photo identification to collect the Harvard ID and room key.
  • Plan for a maximum 20-minute unloading period at the dorm drop-off.
  • Check the Harvard Yard Mail Center instructions before shipping anything ahead.
