Confirm the bed size for your building

There is no single published mattress size covering every Howard residence, and some university-sponsored properties operate differently from university-run halls.

Bed and room basics

Howard housing spans multiple residence types along with university-sponsored properties, and some sponsored properties use different operations or mail systems. Use Howard's residence-hall page for the assigned building's amenities, bathroom arrangement and room type. First-time-in-college and second-year residency policies may apply under current university rules.

Pack these first

Howard's published move-in manual recommends practical room, laundry, bathroom and identification essentials, including:

  • A desk or floor lamp
  • Food containers
  • A garbage can
  • A key or card holder
  • Reusable shopping bags
  • Bedding in the size confirmed for the assigned residence

Rules and smart skips

Howard's guidance says to leave these at home:

  • Candles, incense and fragrance burners
  • Command Strips and LED stick lights
  • Non-surge-protected extension cords
  • Halogen lamps and portable heaters
  • Cooking appliances in non-cooking areas
  • Motorbikes and motor scooters
  • Unapproved animals, weapons, fireworks and hazardous materials

Command Strips are on the leave-home list here, which catches people out, since they are the default wall solution almost everywhere else. Review the current manual, because lists and residence-specific rules change.

Before move-in

  • Follow the assigned move-in date and time, including last-name groupings when they are used.
  • Howard publishes traffic and parking plans for high-volume streets and designated lots, and parking availability ends at the published daily time.
  • Complete all housing clearances before arrival.
  • Bring required identification, label belongings and follow staff directions.
  • Most students use the residence hall's official address format for mail. Wish and Mazza use a private mail system, so residents there follow building-management instructions.
