Yale University
📍 New Haven, CT
Quick take
Yale's appliance rules are unusually specific: one microwave up to 700 watts, or a fridge up to 3.1 cubic feet, or a combined unit. Read that sentence again before anyone in the suite orders anything.
Bed and room basics
Yale provides each student with an 80-by-36-inch extra-long twin bed, a desk, chair, bureau, and a closet or wardrobe. First-year suites include common-room furniture. Room type, bathroom access, air conditioning, flooring and storage all vary by building, and Yale does not publish floor plans, so dimensions are unknown until you arrive. University-provided furniture has to stay in the room.
Pack these first
- Extra-long twin bedding sized to the 80-by-36-inch mattress
- Towels, toiletries and a shower caddy where the bathroom is shared
- Laundry supplies and hangers
- A UL-listed surge protector
- Basic cleaning supplies
Rules and smart skips
- Personal mattresses and window air conditioners are not allowed.
- A room may have one microwave up to 700 watts, one refrigerator up to 3.1 cubic feet, or one combined microwave-refrigerator unit. Not all three.
- Small kettles and Keurig-style brewers are allowed. Hot plates, toasters, rice cookers, conventional coffeepots, space heaters, candles and incense are prohibited.
- Wait on a rug, large organizers, extra seating and shared appliances until the assignment lands.
One appliance per room, chosen together. This is the conversation to have with suitemates in July, not the week of move-in.
Before move-in
- Yale required new students to arrive August 23, 2026 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. by reservation.
- Parking, ID and key instructions follow separately, so watch for them rather than assuming last year's process.
- Coordinate the single shared appliance, the rug and common-room items with suitemates before anyone buys.
