The quick take

UMaine uses 80-inch Twin XL beds set at a storage-friendly mid-loft height.

Bed and room basics

Standard mattresses are 80 inches long. Beds are generally set about 38 inches to the top of the mattress, leaving roughly 27 to 30 inches below. Rooms typically include a bed, mattress, desk, chair, bureau, trash can, recycling bin and blinds. Students 6 feet 5 inches or taller may request a limited 84-inch bed.

Pack first

Bring Twin XL bedding, mattress pad, towels, shower caddy and shoes, HE detergent, hangers, fan, 15-amp UL surge protector, cleaning supplies and cold-weather layers. Laundry is included.

Rules and smart skips

One mini-fridge up to 4.0 cubic feet or approved MicroChill is allowed per room. Fridges under 4 cu ft Leave cooking appliances, heated blankets, personal routers, halogen lamps, air conditioners, candles, incense and hoverboards home.

Before move-in

  • Confirm your campus, building, room type and bed size.
  • Coordinate shared appliances and cleaning supplies.
  • Review the latest check-in time, route and unloading rules.
  • Keep bedding, identification, medication and chargers accessible.

Maine weather believes in layers. Your August packing list should too.
