Quick take

CU Boulder residence halls use 36 × 80-inch Twin XL mattresses and provide a microwave, refrigerator and freezer combination in each room. Room layouts and air conditioning vary, so check the assigned hall before buying storage or assuming a fan is optional.

Start with the assignment

CU Boulder offers residence halls plus apartment-style options. Confirm the building, room type, bathroom arrangement, air conditioning and furniture measurements on the assigned hall page.

What CU Boulder provides

Each residence-hall resident generally receives a Twin XL bed with waterproof mattress, desk and chair, dresser, closet space, bulletin board and lockable filing cabinet. Rooms include window coverings, overhead lighting, trash and recycling bins, internet and a microwave/refrigerator/freezer combination.

Reed and Williams Village apartments have full-size kitchen appliances. Bear Creek and Weber apartment furnishings differ, so use the building page.

Bedding rule

Bring Twin XL sheets for a standard residence-hall assignment. CU Boulder lists the mattress at 80 × 36 × 7 inches.

Pack first

  • Twin XL bedding and thin mattress cover
  • Towels and shower supplies
  • Laundry hamper and detergent
  • Hangers, desk lamp and approved surge protector
  • Small fan, especially for halls without air conditioning
  • CAT 6 Ethernet cable if useful
  • Winter clothing, rain gear, sunscreen and reusable water bottle

CU encourages residents to wait a few days before buying a topper or significant storage. The mountain view will not make an oversized organizer fit.

Leave home

CU does not permit personal lofts, air conditioners, space heaters, cooking appliances, personal Wi-Fi routers, halogen lamps or adhesive LED strips. Check the complete current list.

Before move-in

  • Select the official move-in appointment before booking travel.
  • Confirm the hall, room type and air conditioning.
  • Coordinate electronics and shared items with roommates.
  • Follow the assigned unloading instructions.
  • Bring one carload when possible, as CU recommends.
