Quick answer: Disinfecting wipes, all-purpose spray, paper towels or cloths, trash bags, a handheld vacuum or broom, and disinfecting supplies for sick season. Keep it in one bin and run a 20-minute weekly reset.
The kit
- Disinfecting wipes: the workhorse. Desk, fridge handle, doorknob, mini fridge shelves.
- All-purpose spray and cloths: for anything wipes can't handle. Microfiber cloths wash with the regular laundry.
- Paper towels: for the messes you do not want to keep.
- Trash bags: more than you think. Small bathroom-size bags fit most dorm bins.
- Handheld vacuum or compact broom: carpet halls want the vacuum, tile halls the broom. Check which floor you have.
- Dish soap and a sponge: even without a kitchen, mugs and containers happen.
- Laundry supplies: covered separately in the laundry guide, but detergent lives in the same mental category.
- Sick-season backup: a small spray disinfectant and tissues, stored before anyone needs them.

The schedule that actually happens
Daily cleaning does not survive college. Weekly cleaning can. The whole system is the Dorm Sunday Reset: trash out, laundry moving, bed refreshed, desk cleared, supplies restocked, surfaces wiped and floor done, twenty minutes total. Roommates alternate weeks or split the room down the middle.
- Weekly: the reset above.
- Every few weeks: fridge shelf wipe-down and a real vacuum pass under things.
- Once a semester: fridge defrost if needed, under-bed excavation, and a wipe of the walls near the trash bin.
What not to mix
Never combine bleach with ammonia-based cleaners like many glass sprays, and never combine bleach with vinegar or other acids. Both combinations release gases that can genuinely hurt you, and a small dorm room with one window is the worst possible place for them. One all-purpose cleaner plus wipes covers everything a dorm needs, so the simplest fix is not owning bleach at all.
Storage that survives a small room
One bin, everything in it, somewhere reachable without moving furniture. Under the sink if you have one, the closet floor if you do not. If getting the supplies out takes five minutes, the weekly reset quietly dies by October. More small-room ideas live in dorm storage ideas.
Add the cleaning kit to your DormHQ list and check it off before move-in.
